Nikon SLM Solutions is a leading manufacturer of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) machines, equipped with state-of-the-art multi-laser options. These machines, often referred to as advanced 3D metal printers, melt metal powder using precise laser technology to create complex components for industries such as aerospace and healthcare. Preparing files for these high-tech machines, with up to 12 x 1kW lasers, requires custom software solutions.
To this end, SLM.Prep was specifically designed by Ergosign to maximize usability, intuitiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness. Through close and intensive collaboration between Ergosign’s design and development teams and the product team at SLM, we were able to ensure the best possible translation of design concepts into the software.
New UI for Nikon SLM.Prep by Ergosign
Optimal UX for the pioneers of 3D metal printing
BriefHigh-tech meets intuitiveness
The goal of SLM.Prep is to make preparing files for additive metal printing as simple and intuitive as possible. Users should be able to easily navigate the print preparation process, such as determining the print quality for the entire component or specific parts, as well as the surface structure. The software and UI design aim to support users in achieving the highest quality and sustainability standards.
ApproachAchieving the goal with UX research
To fulfill this task, Ergosign visited Nikon SLM's facilities in Lübeck. There, we delved deep into the world of additive metal manufacturing. The first step was to accompany the engineers in their work and understand their daily workflows and challenges through interviews. Workshops with the client followed, after which a prototype, known as a click dummy, was developed. This prototype was validated through usability testing before further iterations were conducted. With such complex software, it is crucial to develop a deep understanding of the users' requirements and needs to create a tailored solution. Early testing of ideas and solutions helps validate assumptions quickly and easily before entering the costly development phase.
OutcomePriority: Usability
The current solution combines the best of both worlds: software design and complex metal printing, fostering innovation and outstanding components. Ergosign and Nikon SLM share a key commonality: a focus on the users. That’s why UX design, intuitive operation, and optimal usability were given special priority – especially given the complex use cases of the software. The solution now features clear navigation that makes complex processes more efficient. The design consists of a system of modular components, creating a coherent structure that guides users through the tasks and fully leverages the possibilities of selective laser melting.
